Who is Justin Trudeau’s Brother? Meet Alexandre ‘Sacha’ Trudeau – Justin Pierre James Trudeau PC MP is the 23rd and current prime minister of Canada, and the leader of the Liberal Party.
Born on December 25, 1971, in Ottawa, Trudeau is the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history, after Joe Clark. He is also the first to be the child of a previous holder of the post, as the eldest son of Pierre Trudeau.
Trudeau attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf before graduating from McGill University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature. He later obtained a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia in 1998. After graduation, he taught at the secondary school level in Vancouver before moving back to Montreal in 2002 to pursue further studies.
Trudeau has been involved in numerous charitable organizations, including serving as the chair for the youth charity Katimavik and director of the not-for-profit Canadian Avalanche Association. He was also appointed as chair of the Liberal Party’s Task Force on Youth Renewal in 2006.
Trudeau was first elected to represent the riding of Papineau in the House of Commons in the 2008 federal election. He served as the Liberal Party’s Official Opposition critic for youth and multiculturalism in 2009, followed by critic for citizenship and immigration the following year. In 2011, he was appointed as a critic for secondary education and sport.
Trudeau became the leader of the Liberal Party in April 2013 and led his party to victory in the 2015 federal election, where they moved from third place to 184 seats, the largest-ever numerical increase by a party in a Canadian federal election.
During his first term as prime minister, his government undertook major initiatives such as legalizing recreational marijuana, attempting Senate appointment reform, and establishing a federal carbon tax. In foreign policy, Trudeau’s government negotiated trade deals and signed the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Trudeau won the 2019 federal election, leading the Liberals to a minority government victory. During his second term, his government responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, announced an “assault-style” weapons ban in response to the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks, and was investigated for his part in the WE Charity scandal.
In the 2021 federal election, he led the Liberals to another minority government and introduced a limited dental care program. He also invoked the Emergencies Act in response to the Freedom Convoy protests, marking the first time the act had been brought into force since its enactment in 1988.
Who is Justin Trudeau’s Brother? Meet Alexandre Trudeau
Alexandre Trudeau, born on December 25, 1973, is a Canadian filmmaker, journalist, and author of Barbarian Lost. He is the younger brother of Canada’s current prime minister, Justin Trudeau, and the second son of former prime minister, Pierre Trudeau, and Margaret Trudeau.
Like his father and brothers, he studied at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf, graduating from McGill University with a B.A. in philosophy and a Masters in architecture.
While at McGill, he joined the Canadian Forces as a Reserve Entry Scheme Officer, training at CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick. He produced his first documentary, Liberia, the Secret War, in West Africa after graduation.
Following his father’s death in 2000, both of Pierre Trudeau’s surviving sons returned to the public eye. Alexandre Trudeau continued to live in his father’s Art Deco home (Cormier House) in Montreal and produced documentaries for Canadian television.
In 2003, he covered the 2003 invasion of Iraq, producing a documentary film for the CTV program W5, Embedded In Baghdad. His 2004 film, The Fence, addressed the families on either side of the Israeli-built security barrier around the West Bank.
Alexandre Trudeau focused attention on the implications for civil liberties in the Canadian government’s use of security certificates to detain indefinitely, without trial, suspected terrorists based on secret evidence in June 2005.
He offered to be a surety for Hassan Almrei, a Syrian refugee held in a Canadian jail for four years without any charges being laid. Trudeau’s efforts were chronicled in his documentary Secure Freedom, and Almrei was ordered released under house arrest by a Federal Court judge on January 2, 2009.
In 2016, Alexandre Trudeau published his first book, Barbarian Lost, a travel memoir with an undercurrent of philosophical and historical reflection about China. He is the President and Chief Producer at Same Adventure Productions, a founding member of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation for excellence in social sciences and humanities research and innovation.
