In February 2023, he made major headlines when he referred to George Santos as an ‘a sick puppy’ stating that, he had no place in Congress in a heated exchange at the State of the Union event.
The encounter took place ahead of President Joe Biden’s speech on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, as Mr. Santos shook hands with people near Mr. Romney’s seat.
Mr. Romney later told reporters that he believed Mr. Santos ‘should be sitting in the back row’.
This comes after a few months when Mr. Santos reportedly admitted to fabricating large parts of his CV and biography and has faced calls to resign.
After the address at the State of the Union event, Mr. Romney told reporters that Mr. Santos “shouldn’t be in Congress”.
“I didn’t expect him to be standing there trying to shake hands with every senator and the president of the United States,” Mr. Romney said.
“Given the fact that he’s under an ethics investigation, he should be sitting in the back row and staying quiet instead of parading in front of the president and the people coming into the room,”
Adding that, if Mr. Santos “had any shame at all, he wouldn’t be there”.
