He also reported games for The Times under his own identity as a ghostwriter for football analyst Jimmy Hill’s column.

He accepted a job working behind the scenes on LWT’s The Big Match, which had been founded in 1968, at Hill’s encouragement.

Even though his job was strictly production-related, he once recorded his own commentary for a match and gave it to his managers, anticipating and initially receiving little feedback.

Tyler moved to Yorkshire Television in 1976, where he started to make an impact on ITV Sport executives, who then picked him for the 1978 World Cup squad.

In 1981, Tyler relocated to Granada in his home region of the North West. He oversaw ITV’s World Cup coverage in 1982, working with Ian St. John to cover every England game including the championship match.

He covered live England internationals, FA Cup games, and Scottish League there. For two more years, Tyler’s commentary could be heard on ITV as they carried the Football League’s international broadcasts.

Tyler won the title of Premier League Commentator of The Decade in the April 2003 Premier League 10 Seasons Awards, which were decided upon by a team of football professionals and fans.

Sky started using a rotational system for their top commentators in 2005. Tyler, Alan Parry, Rob Hawthorne, and Ian Darke, who had prioritized boxing for ten years, split the top bouts more evenly. Ian Darke also regularly returned to football.
