Prior to her presidency, Magill earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Yale University in 1988 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1995.
In her professional career, Magill worked as a senior legislative assistant for U.S. Senator Kent Conrad from 1988 to 1992. After law school, she served as a law clerk for Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and later clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She joined the faculty of the University of Virginia School of Law in 1997, where she worked for 15 years.
Liz Magill became the dean of Stanford Law School in 2012 and, in 2019, returned to the University of Virginia to serve as the school’s provost. She assumed the role of president at the University of Pennsylvania in July 2022.
Magill faced controversy in 2023 for her handling of academic freedom and responses to events related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on campus. This led to criticism, calls for her resignation, and a decline in financial support for the university. In November 2023, she announced a plan to combat antisemitism, but her testimony on December 5, 2023, regarding calls for Jewish genocide, drew widespread condemnation. In response to mounting pressure, Magill announced her resignation on December 9, 2023, while continuing to lead the university until a replacement is found.
