Smollett started his acting career in New York City as a kid model. He then appeared as an extra in the films New Jack City (1991) and Mo’ Better Blues (1990), both of which were filmed there.
He continued acting, appearing in Rob Reiner’s North (1994) and The Mighty Ducks (1992). He appeared on television in the 1994–1995 ABC sitcom On Our Own with his five real-life siblings.
