Former backup quarterback Trey Lance was named the 2022 starter over Garoppolo during training camp. Garoppolo and the 49ers agreed to a one-year contract extension. As part of the contract, he received a fully guaranteed base salary of $6.5 million.
Garoppolo entered the game in the first quarter against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 after Lance left with a broken ankle. Garoppolo threw for 154 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for another in the 27-7 victory.
Lance’s injury was revealed to be season-ending after the game, allowing Garoppolo to reclaim the starting spot for the rest of the season.
