Earl Simmons was born in Mount Vermon, New York in the United States on December 18, 1970. His parents were Arnett Simmons and Joe Barker. He had an elder sister Bonita born by her teen age parents. His father at the time of his birth was a 19 year old watercolor painter who made a living off selling his paintings at local fairs. HIs mother was an absentee mom for the largest part of his childhood.
Simmons had a very tough childhood as he was almost always rushed to the hospital for his inability to breathe when he wakes up from his sleep. Simmons was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness but soon turned away from its doctrines after he was hit by a drunk driver. His mother a staunch adherer to the church’s doctrine rejected a US$10,000 settlement and this anger the young Simmons as they we living in poverty.
He was enrolled to Yonkers Middle High School. He hardly even went to school to talk of his bad grades. As a way to get out of poverty, he started petty thefts. It graduated to carjacking. DMX’s career began when he was inside for carjacking. He took it upon himself to write his lyrics anytime he was free. Upon his release, he recorded his mixtapes off instrumentals and sold them at the corner of his hood. In the process, he created his local fanbase.
His first official deal came in 1996 when Def Jam signed him. He commercial kicked off after that deal and he soon become a household name. In 1999, he got married to his childhood friend Tashera. The couple went on to have 4 children, although altogether, DMX has fathered 17 children. Their marriage lasted for11 years, ending in 2014.
DMX died on April 9, 2021 at the White Plains Hospital-Emergency Department, White Plains, New York, United States. He was in a coma for an overdose and it was announced that he was in a vegetable state before his last breath. The late rapper and actor’s net worth is believed to be -US$1 million in 2023.
