History About Ghana Navy

The British founded the Gold Coast Volunteer Force during World War II to undertake seaward patrols and maintain the colony’s coastal waterways devoid of mines, that is when the Ghana Navy was first formed.

A fresh group of volunteers was established at the time of liberation, with Takoradi serving as its headquarters. This was divided into two parts, one based in Takoradi and the other in Accra. The Ghana Navy’s founding members were drawn from the first batch of ratings produced by this voluntary force.

Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President set the true foundation for the Navy in 1959.

Parliament has also authorized the purchase of a second frigate to serve as a fleet support vessel. The project was only relegated to the planning stage.

Also in 1959 was indeed a naval facility at Sekondi for the force, but it had to be dramatically reduced after the coup.

The force had a respectable 13 ships when four Russian patrol boats were added in 1967.

The Ghana Navy now has 6 ships and a short inshore patrol boat, the GNS HANSEN, in its fleet, fifty years after being founded.

Findings revealed that only 4 of these 6 ships—GNS ACHIMOTA, GNS YOGAGA, GNS DZATA, and GNS SEBO—are true battleships.

The other two, GNS ANZONE and GNS BONSU, were bought from the US government roughly seven years ago and they provide assistance or logistical ships that can’t really be categorized as combat ships.

The rank and insignia for each officer differs and they are unique.

This is as a result that they exist in clearly delineated grades based on knowledge, competence, and other characteristics that distinguish them. 

Following are the Ghana Navy’s positions, from lowest to highest:

The acting sub-lieutenant officer has the least seniority, followed by the sub-lieutenant, lieutenant, lieutenant commander, commander, captain, commodore, rear-admiral, vice admiral, and the admiral, who has the most senior position.

With the exception of the Ghanaian coat of arms and cap badges, the rank symbols, uniform, and badges of the Ghana Navy closely match those of the British military in its former territory.

A trapezium-shaped insignia with a circle and a line connecting each end designates sub-lieutenant as an ensign. The commander and lieutenant commander positions both have two lines, with the lieutenant position having an additional line, giving them a somewhat different appearance.

Under the circle of linked lines on the captain’s emblem are 3 levels. The rear admiral lower half and the rear admiral upper half make up the rear admiral post.

For the rear admiral, the trapezium’s lower half is made out of a circle with a rectangle underneath. Rear admiral top half of the trapezium has a circle connected by a line running side to side, whereas vice admiral lower half has another line.

The admiral and fleet admiral hold the highest executive rank and wear no insignia.

The present Ghana navy is a development of the British ranks and insignia, and similarities in the combat outfits and colors are also readily apparent.

Is Ghana Navy Salary Good?
