Rubin began his career as a robotics engineer at Carl Zeiss AG, an optical systems maker, from 1986 until 1989. He then worked as a manufacturing engineer for Apple from 1989 to 1992. Following that, Rubin worked at General Magic, WebTV Networks, and Motorola, where he was the principal engineer for the Motorola Envoy personal digital assistant. Later, in 1999, Rubin co-founded Danger alongside Joe Britt and Matt Hershenson. The company focused on software, hardware design, and mobile computing services.
